The European Milk Banking Association (EMBA) and its partners have recently launched their EU-funded project “IMAGINE-HMB” in Milan (10 September 2024). The IMAGINE-HMB (Implementation of Harmonised Human Milk Guidelines for Infant Nutrition in Europe) project aims to constitute an EU Expert Forum specialised in human milk and milk banking to develop evidence-based guidelines for both milk banking practices and establishment/entity oversight requirements across Europe.
The IMAGINE-HMB project is being coordinated by EMBA, in collaboration with the Consortium partners, the Polish Human Milk Banking Foundation (HMBF), the German Human Milk Banking Initiative (FMBI), the Spanish Association of Human Milk Banks (AEBLH) and the Irish Neonatal Health Alliance (INHA).
During the kick-off meeting in Milan, several aspects of the project were discussed and work packages were assigned to the Consortium. The Consortium will guide experts through the process of drafting evidence-based guidelines to ensure compliance with the new EU regulations on Substances of Human Origin (SoHO). An implementation and training programme will help human milk establishments achieve full compliance with the guidelines produced.
